A lot of people use the winter as an excuse to do pretty much nothing outside of their own homes, it’s too cold, it’s too icy, it’s too grey, wet and miserable, who can blame them. Well now spring is on our doorstep it’s a great time to blow out the cobwebs and start exploring. A lot of places that were either closed or just didn’t look like realistic options over the winter have started looking a lot more appealing and opening their doors to everyone. Maybe you’ve let things slip over the colder months and need to get some exercise. Whatever you’re planning, spring is a great time to start doing it, you never know you might find a new interest that’ll keep you occupied right the way through the rest of the year and beyond. Stately Homes and CastlesA lot of places are closed over winter whether it’s for maintenance or just for the simple reason they can’t support the low visitor numbers. Come spring they start opening their doors again just the same as a lot of other attractions. It’s definitely worth keeping an eye out in the local papers or having a quick search on the internet for any special events they may be holding as at this time of year as they’ll be trying to get people back through the doors again. Theme ParksA lot of theme parks are starting to pull in the first of the new seasons crowds, places like Alton Towers, Thorpe Park, Chessington and Lego Land start to open their doors mid to late march with the exception of a couple of special events over the winter months. So it’s usually wise just to check on their websites before going just to see if they have actually opened. Car Boot FairsSpending the morning looking around in other peoples jumble may not sound the best idea for a day out but in todays financial climate you could possibly pick up some great bargains, then again you could always get out early, secure yourself a pitch and make yourself a fair bit of money. Zoos and Rare Breeds CentresGetting down to your local zoo or rare breeds centre can be a real treat for kids and grown-ups alike with numerous new born animals that make an appearance over spring, also with the weather hopefully being very pleasant some of the larger zoo parks are a lot less of an ordeal than they are during the hotter summer months where you end up walking miles in the scorching summer heat. BeachesEven though it’s not quite the weather for stripping off and jumping in the sea it’s still worthwhile taking the kids down to the beach and letting them explore around the rock pools or maybe taking the dog out for a run on the beach. Also a lot of coastal attractions are starting to open up again so although the weather may not be on the right side of warm it’ll still be pleasant enough to make a day of it. Sports and ActivitiesWhy not try something different, there’s certainly lots to do when you look around, have you ever thought of taking a relaxing trip in a hot air balloon? At this time of year you may be lucky enough to get an early morning mist which will add a really spectacular photo opportunity as you look down on the surrounding countryside. If you’re a bit more adventurous, then how about kite buggying, tearing along the beach holding onto a kite for dear life whilst strapped into a buggy. Or maybe like a lot of people it’s just time to dust off the bike and go for a cycle around the lanes down to a local village pub for a well earned pub lunch. Starting a new activity at this time of year is a great idea as you still have the rest of the year to carry on enjoying it rather than thinking winter is just around the corner and you put it off again until the following year. There’s so much to do in spring, all it takes is a quick look in the local ‘what’s on’ supplement or a quick search on local attraction websites and you’ll have plenty of ideas to fill those weekends and spring breaks. |
